What is a VCE Study Score and How is It Calculated?

In Australia's Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), a Study Score is a relative performance measure given out of 50 for each Unit 3 & 4 study. It is not a percentage mark; rather, it reflects your ranking compared to every student who completed that subject across Victoria in the same calendar year.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) designs study scores to follow a normal Gaussian bell curve with a state mean of 30 and a standard deviation of 7. Scoring 30 places you precisely in the middle of Victoria.

Raw vs. Scaled Study Scores: What You Need to Know

Understanding the critical difference between raw and scaled scores helps you make strategic subject decisions:

Raw Study Score (Issued by VCAA)

Your score strictly within your subject's state cohort, derived from your moderated SACs and official November VCAA exam.

  • Always between 0 and 50
  • Printed on your official VCE statement of results
Scaled Study Score (Calculated by VTAC)

Adjusted by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) to reflect overall competition strength across all subjects.

  • Can exceed 50 for high-scaling subjects (e.g., Specialist Maths)
  • Directly adds to your Primary 4 + Increments ATAR Aggregate

VTAC Subject Scaling Benchmarks Reference Table

VCE Subject Typical Scaling Adjustment
Specialist Mathematics Scales UP (+10 to +12 points at Raw 30)
French / LOTE Languages Scales UP (+6 to +10 points)
Mathematical Methods Scales UP (+4 to +5 points at Raw 30)
Chemistry & Physics Scales UP (+2 to +4 points at Raw 30)
English / EAL Scales evenly (~0 point change at Raw 30)
Biology / Psychology Scales slightly down (-1 to -2 points at Raw 30)
General Mathematics Scales DOWN (-2 to -3 points at Raw 30)
Business Management Scales DOWN (-4 to -5 points at Raw 30)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What counts as an average VCE study score in Australia?
By definition, the mean (average) raw study score across all subjects in Victoria is 30. A raw score of 30 means you scored higher than 50% of students in that subject.
How does VTAC turn my study scores into an ATAR?
VTAC takes your best English subject plus your next 3 highest scaled scores (Primary 4), plus 10% of your 5th and 6th subjects (Bottom 2). The sum of these is your Aggregate, which is converted to an ATAR percentile from 0.00 to 99.95.
Can my study score scale above 50?
Yes! High-scaling subjects with strong academic competition (such as Specialist Mathematics, Latin, or Hebrew) can scale raw scores of 46–50 up to a maximum scaled score of approximately 55.
What study score do I need for an 80 or 90 ATAR?
To achieve an 80 ATAR, students typically need scaled study scores averaging around 33 to 34 across their top 4 subjects. For a 90+ ATAR, you generally require an average scaled score of 38 or higher.
Does the General Achievement Test (GAT) affect my study score?
The GAT does not directly count toward your study score, but VCAA uses it to verify exam marking accuracy and calculate Derived Examination Scores (DES) if an illness or emergency occurs.
